International Women's Day Celebration in NYC 2011 - Meet me on a bridge.. - Anahi DeCanio -

The theme around the world for this special centenary celebration was "Meet me on a bridge" And a bridge of humanity it was! An energetic, chanting, smiling, scarf waving and tall standing bunch.

I almost didn't make it. Deciding between art deadlines and the myriad of minutia that can sometimes invade my days I admit I felt pressured to take what seemed like the easier road. Fortunately, I had an "aha moment"... the ones I have after I morbidly picture myself on my death bed reminiscing about my life and things I should have done vs. the ones I actually did.

Before I could fully bring my thoughts back to present day I was out the door - Nikon in hand. When I arrived at Cadman Park in Brooklyn I was greeted by the sounds of rhythmic drum beats and the quiet solidarity of smiling friends and strangers. Men and women, defined by banners, buttons and t-shirts marking the day, were pleased with themselves just for being there. I know I was smitten with self pride myself. After a well organized registration period, we were called to start the walk. I set off a few feet ahead of the pack so I could capture as many shots as I could. I do remember thinking I wish I was in better shape for this feat. Selfishly speaking, I don't know if I was running to get the best shots to share with you or just to own them in my own memory bank.

Walking next to the professional photographers (those who got paid for the pictures of the day!) and occasionally elbowing my way through them to get just the right angle, I clicked away for a total of 442 pictures. I took pride in every click and breath. I know I'm the corny passionate type (usually a bit over the top) but it really was just perfect - slightly sore muscles and all.

After a mile plus (1/7 of a mile if you really want to know) we arrived at City Hall Park in Manhattan. Inspiring eloquent speakers, including Russell Simmons and Lauren Bush, reminded us that perhaps we can all do a bit more to mark this centenary celebration. After all, woman's day is everyday and our work is never done, or so they say, right? Even a collective $10 donation from all of us can go a long way to lift women and children out of poverty.

I am grateful to all the organizers, supporters, volunteers, donors and participants that made this day happen on this March 8th. I was reminded that we have a lot to celebrate... and a looong way to go on the road to improve our lives and the lives of women all over our world! So, next year, when March rolls around and you start seeing shamrocks in the windows... remember that a few days before I will have another bridge to sell... The bridge we can all march on to erase the gap of inequality that has plagued women since the beginning of time. Whether we actually walk across bridges or stand firm where we're planted, I do know that a path has been laid out and I will continue to be on it - camera on hand! Hope you will too.

Carpe Diem!
